The Karst Farming Network is a group of proactive farmers who got together in South Roscommon in 2019 to bring attention and protection to the unique and nationally important karst grasslands of South Roscommon.
While these grasslands have huge benefits for biodiversity, water quality and climate mitigation, they are under threat.
GIS mapping surveys conducted by Senus (senus.com) found that over 60% of these habitat areas had been lost in the last 100 years.
Sustainable grazing practices are key to maintaining these biodiverse karst grasslands which include boulder pastures, eskers and turloughs.
Liam Kildea, from a 3rd generation family farm, was pivotal in founding and organising the group which has won several national awards in conjunction with The Celtic Eye Art and The Uí Máine Kingdom Groups.
